Free RAW Photo: San Francisco (California)

The free RAW photo is from my Canon shooting days. I took it with Canon 60D and one of my favorites Canon lens 70-200mm f/4.

I took the photo in the worst shooting conditions. It was early afternoon on a hazy and foggy winter day, shooting San Francisco hills from far away (Treasure Island) using a telephoto lens.

Exif Data:

  • Camera: Canon 60D
  • Lens: Canon 70-200mm f/4
  • Aperture: f/8
  • Shutter Speed: 1/500s
  • ISO: 100
  • Focal length: 192mm

I believe it will be a real challenge to bring this free RAW image to life. Haze, fog, and distance reduced the contrast next to zero.

Look at the histogram of the photo. It has no dark or bright areas, all image information is located in the midtones.

The main challenge will be to increase the contrast without oversaturating the colors.

Good luck.

My RAW Editing Version

And here is my editing version of the free RAW image. You can access all my editing steps from the Snapshot Panel of the Develop module in Lightroom.

To improve the composition I made it tighter by cropping it but without changing the original aspect ratio. I also minimized the impact of unappealing water of the San Francisco Bay.

Next, I used pretty much all tools of Lightroom to salvage the photo.
